On 6th February 2025, SONATA will host its first Recommendations Workshop in Aachen, Germany. This workshop is open to those with scientific and other relevant expertise interested in learning about, and participating in, the development of the baseline SONATA recommendations on best practice in the use of architectural adaptive technologies in the workspace.
Architectural adaptive technologies on a personal scale can have a profound impact on the health and wellbeing of office workers by promoting a more holistic approach to building design, allowing office environments to be tailored to the individual needs of workers. These technologies can significantly impact the health and mental wellbeing of office workers by creating more comfortable and supportive workspaces. The SONATA project explores how adaptive technologies like electrochromic glass, omnidirectional smart lighting, and height-adjustable acoustic ceiling panels can improve workplace conditions. These technologies aim to create environments that adapt to the ever-changing needs of workers, rather than forcing workers to adapt to their environments. By automating a wide range of building services such as smart shading, HVAC, and lighting systems, flexible office partitions, and height-adjustable desks, these technologies can help mitigate issues like acoustic discomfort, lack of control over environmental conditions, and insufficient space. This approach aims to enhance both physical and mental health by providing a more adaptable and responsive work environment.
The workshop offers participants the opportunity to collaborate in the refinement of the recommendations, helping us to ensure that they are in line with the most recent thinking, current needs and values in the field. In taking part you can help to maximise impact in improving future workspace health and wellbeing.
Participants will hear from Keynote Speaker Dr. Ir. Rianne Appel-Meulenbroek, associate professor from Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, and SONATA’s own experts.
There is also the chance to visit the world’s first 1:1 prototype of the adaptive office of the future at Aachen Workplace Simulation Laboratory, University Hospital RWTH Aachen.
Full details are available in the invite, below, and in the registration form.
Spaces are limited in the venue, so make sure to register soon! Online participation is also possible (excluding the lab demonstration) for those unable to attend in person.
